Background

Professional journey from music composition to interactive art and technology.

Origins

I grew up in Cincinnati and studied music composition at Heidelberg University (B.M. 2011) — both the classical kind and the "plug things into other things and see what happens" kind. Pretty quickly I got more interested in what happens when sound meets physical space and real people, which led to making work for galleries, public spaces, and anywhere that wasn't a traditional concert hall.

Intermedio

In 2014, I co-founded Intermedio with Eric Blyth and Sam Ferris-Morris. It started as a few friends making weird installations and turned into a decade of figuring out what happens when you fill a room with sensors, speakers, and lights and ask a bunch of strangers to do something together. We wrapped up the studio in 2024.

We showed at the Contemporary Arts Center, FotoFocus Biennial, BLINK Cincinnati, Eaux Claires Festival, and a bunch of galleries and public spaces around the region. Some pieces toured to multiple venues, and "Twist" is still standing as a permanent installation in downtown Cincinnati.

Knee Play

Knee Play is a musical ensemble outgrowth of Intermedio—an outlet for collaborative and experimental performances. We make music using repurposed slide projectors, color tracking webcams, swinging pendulums, light sensors, computers, and other contraptions.

The group consists of a continuously changing roster of improvisors and composers. Performances range from structured improvisations with interactive media to composed works for instrumentalists and vocalists.

Museum Experience

From 2015 to 2022, I worked at the Contemporary Arts Center — starting as Preparator and moving up to Senior Preparator. I also did prep work at the Taft Museum of Art, Carl Solway Gallery, and The Carnegie. Seven years of building walls, hanging art, and solving weird logistical problems taught me how things actually get made and installed in the real world.

  • Installation, de-installation, packing, shipping, and receiving artwork
  • Collaboration with curators, registration, and staff on exhibit development
  • Art handling, environmental monitoring, and storage management
  • Construction of temporary walls/platforms, lighting of exhibits
  • OSHA and ADA compliance
  • Collections care and inventory management

Current Role

Since 2021, I've been teaching and managing IT at Leaves of Learning. I teach Digital Worlds, Technical Theater, and D&D-based learning — basically using technology and games as creative tools, not just subjects to study. I also keep the school's tech running, which keeps me honest about what actually works day-to-day.

The teaching side covers computing history, AI ethics, web development, DMX lighting, sound design, scenic construction, and systems thinking through tabletop RPGs. On the IT side, I handle the student information system, network infrastructure, and a custom registration app I built from scratch.

Earlier Experience

Before the museum, I fixed computers, TVs, and audio gear at A-Hi Computers and Electronics (2012-2013). Before that, an AmeriCorps gig at Wyoming Fine Arts Center (2011-2012) got me into community arts programming — organizing concerts and connecting instructors with the neighborhood.

University Teaching

From 2018 to 2021, I did guest critiques at University of Cincinnati and University of Kentucky — coming in to give feedback on student work across different studio courses.
