Khemia interactive light installation

Description

Eight DMX-controlled Edison bulbs dispersed among the musicians of the Khemia Ensemble, embedding a reactive visual canvas directly within the performing group. Working closely with the ensemble's composers, we designed a Max/MSP patch that combined pre-programmed lighting routines for complex musical passages with amplitude-responsive modes that let the lights breathe with the dynamics of each performance. The fixtures traveled in a custom-built breakdown case, allowing the installation to tour with the ensemble across multiple US cities in support of their "Voyages" album.

Concept

A lighting instrument that lives inside the ensemble rather than around it. By placing the fixtures among the performers rather than overhead or offstage, the visual layer becomes inseparable from the music—responding to it, reinforcing it, and giving audiences a way to see the sonic architecture of each composition.
