Interactive Demo
Description
Intermedio's first electronically interactive installation. The space was filled with touch-sensitive tubes embedded with capacitive sensors, each containing a speaker and a color-changing LED light that reacted to audience touch. Every tube played a simple melodic motive that could be altered, expanded, arpeggiated, and rhythmically intensified through participant interaction. Vertical windows in each tube revealed the color-changing LED, casting vertical bands of light on the walls of the darkened space. Together, audience participants created a unique visual and sonic canvas that shifted throughout the duration of their interactions. Each tube possessed a unique melodic series and tonal character determined by its speaker size and the resonance of the tube itself. The piece was presented many times throughout Cincinnati inside a shipping container that moved to various locations, sponsored by PAR Projects. The final iteration doubled the installation's capacity and created an interactive bridge between two locations—a shipping container in Northern Kentucky and a storefront on Vine Street in Cincinnati—allowing participants on either side of the river to see and hear the impact of their counterparts in the other location.
Concept
An instrument hidden inside everyday objects. By embedding sound and light inside unassuming tubes, the piece invites touch as the primary mode of engagement—each participant discovers a unique voice within the installation and, collectively, the audience composes an ever-changing audiovisual environment.
